Research Lines

Research in Environmental Sciences as well as environmental conservation efforts require studies that consider the complexity of ecosystems alongside the human component. The PPG-CiAC is focused on Environmental Sciences and is structured around two main research lines, which together cover all levels of biological complexity, from ecosystem functioning to the role of society.

Biodiversity: structure and recognition

The research line “Biodiversity: Structure and Recognition” aims to understand biological diversity at the most basic levels of ecosystem organization. Biodiversity, in our view, is an integrative term that includes chemical composition and molecular interactions, genetic diversity and the evolution of organisms, biodiversity inventories, and analysis of interactions at the population and community levels in ecosystems. In this research line, graduate students can develop an understanding and evaluation of biodiversity’s role in ecosystem functioning, as well as, determine the biological, aesthetic, and socioeconomic value of the natural heritage affected by various socioeconomic activities.

Natural Systems: assessment, conservation, and socio-environmental development

The research line “Natural Systems: Assessment, Conservation, and Socio-environmental Development” seeks to understand ecosystem functioning by integrating physical, chemical, climatic, biological, and social aspects as a basis for conservation, restoration, and management—essential conditions for achieving sustainable use. This research line aims to integrate various fields of knowledge such as ecology, geosciences, environmental chemistry, health, anthropology, sociology, philosophy, and environmental education in a multidisciplinary manner. Graduate students in this line are encouraged to pursue scientific advances that support socio-environmental development in the northern State of Rio de Janeiro and other areas covered by the Program.
